Hello, over the past week, I've sat down numerous times to share my thoughts with you, only to have to start over. This Message comes with mixed emotions. It is my last Message to you as President of our great Local. Effective June first, I will be retiring as President of Local 776.
The past 11 ½ years guiding Local 776 have been both challenging and rewarding. When I assumed the presidency in January 2015, our local was adrift, like a ship without a rudder. Teamster pride no longer radiated among the members. From the condition of our Union Halls and vehicles to our diminished finances, Local 776 was in trouble. It took a lot of hard work and dedication from the Officers and Business Agents I served with, but we were able to turn things around for the Members.
What does the future hold for the Members of Local 776? Business Agent Spencer Dearth has assumed the presidency and will fill the remainder of my term. Spencer and I were both elected in 2015. We have worked closely together over the years, recognizing that one day I would cede the position to him. Spencer is qualified to continue the progress we've made at Local 776. He's not one to rest on his laurels and be content with the status quo. Spencer will lead from the front by example, a true leader.
As I begin a new chapter in my life as a retiree, I can look back with pride on what we've accomplished together. On June first, please welcome Spencer as your new President.
Fraternally,

Ed Thompson
President, Teamsters Local 776
Thank you, Ed, for the warm introduction and a strong vote of confidence. You're leaving me some big shoes to fill!
Becoming the President of Local 776 is something I take seriously. As the largest local in PA, we lead by example, taking on employers when they violate a contract, standing up for our members' rights in the workplace, and securing the best possible agreements. Working with the Officers and Agents, I aim to continue the progress Local 776 has made since I first took office in 2015.
For those of you who don't know me, let me share a bit of my history. Unionism runs strong in my family; I grew up in a Union household. I'm a second-generation Teamster who has followed in my father's footsteps by getting involved in the Union. I am an 18-year Teamster with UPS/TForce Freight. I was a Local 776 Union Steward for 5 Years, a volunteer Organizer, and the Lead Organizer at UPS Freight in 2008. Additionally, I was a Member of the Teamsters National UPS Freight Negotiating Committee in 2018 and 2023. I have successfully negotiated white paper contracts in-house with Dover Township, York City, International Motors, and UNFI, among others.
I believe a leader leads from the front by example. I will be active with my fellow Business Agents when they ask for my input or assistance. My goal as President is to continue Local 776's progress so that we may continue to provide our members with the best possible contracts, social activities for them and their families, and educational opportunities for them to apply on and off the job.
Fraternally,

Spencer Dearth
