After just 24 days as Local 776 President, Spencer Dearth is already building political relationships. On June 24th, Spencer met with Sara Agerton, who is running for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in the 88th district. The incumbent is not running for re-election, electing to retire at the end of the current term, making this an important election, as it is an open seat.
Sara is currently serving on the Mechanicsburg Borough Council and requested the meeting to discuss the issues affecting Union members. The topics they discussed included the following:
Defending collective bargaining rights: ensuring Pennsylvania remains free from becoming a Right to Work state.
Protecting good union wages against inflation and the rising cost of living.
Warehouse Worker Protection Act: Supporting warehouse and logistics workers, such as those at Amazon and Walmart, who face increased productivity quotas and unsafe working conditions.
Faster Labor Contract Act: Bill awaits action in the U.S. Senate.
Senate Bill 1204: Addressing heat protection and severe-weather exposure for outdoor workers, our UPS drivers would receive relief under this bill, in addition to previously negotiated contract language.
A major concern voiced by Spencer was the issuing of CDLs ( commercial driver's licenses) to undocumented, uneducated drivers, which puts the public at risk.
Job security during automation and emerging new technology: ensuring responsible implementation of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
Keeping manufacturing and distribution jobs in Pennsylvania and investing in transportation infrastructure to support Teamster industries.
Supporting political engagement on issues affecting working families.
After meeting and discussing these issues important to working men and women, Spencer and Sara stopped by the Local 776 archive center to view the Teamster memorabilia collection that defines the Teamsters' rich heritage as leaders in the fight for workers' rights.

Spencer explains Teamster history to Sara as they browse the Teamster memorabilia collection.
