Local 776 hosted a banquet to recognize their Union Stewards on Saturday October 10, 2015. During his opening remarks to the Stewards and their guests President Thompson elaborated on what is a Steward:
“A Union Steward is a problem solver, a leader, a communicator, an educator, and an organizer, just to name a few. To me our Stewards are the back bone of the Teamsters Union. Our Stewards are what make the International, the Joint Council, and last but not least Our Local work. Our Local Union has over 8,500 members and eleven business agents."
"The stewards provide a vital link between the members and the Local Union, often times the steward is the member’s initial contact with the Local. The Local does not pay our stewards for the time and energy the put into their job as stewards; but they do it anyway because they know the importance of having a Union presence at the jobsite. This banquet is our way of saying thank you stewards for all you do.”
"To your spouse I say thank you for being tolerant and understanding when the phone rings, or your husband or wife gets home late and the reason is I was helping one of my co-workers or it was my BA."
"A Steward does not get paid, very rarely does a member say thank you, and your boss in most cases hangs a target on your back and tries to find a way to eliminate you. So why do you do it? If you ask a Steward they will probably tell you someone has to do it, or I like to help people, or I’m just trying to make a difference."
"This is a night to relax and enjoy yourself, and get to know your Brothers and Sisters from the various crafts we represent. So I hope you enjoy dinner, enjoy the Band, and have a good time. "
