  • Teamster members at West York Borough have been busy recently. Patrolman Mike Mendez, a 14-year veteran of the West York Borough Police Dept, was promoted to detective. In his position as detective Mike deals with special victims, abused children, Internet crimes, and other incidents requiring his attention. Mike was promoted at a West York borough Council meeting by interim Police Chief Matt Milsaps.

Also at the West York borough Council meeting Officers Bree Wilson and Scott Musselman were presented with community service awards by Interim Chief Milsaps for their outstanding relationships with the members of the community.

Last but not least a big "Welcome to the Teamsters!" to the West York Borough Highway Dept. who ratified their first contract with the Borough in September.

    Christmas For Kids

Pleae find it in your heart to help those less fortunate than us during the Christmas season. These kids are from some of the most needy families in the York area.

I carry a Union card because it carries me into the hearts and thoughts and sympathetic understandings of millions of other average human beings with problems like my own. My card guarantees me a decent living wage, decent working conditions, and time to enjoy my home and family. It entitles me to the benefits of knowledge and experience of my fellow associates. It gives me social contact I enjoy. It creares within me confidence, good fellowship and a strong sense of security and well being.

It promotes the brotherhood of man through honest work, fair bargaining, "live and let live" and a just reward for all. It stands for self support and mutual advancement, which means unending progress. It advances patriotism, elevates my standards of thought and living, permits me time for cultural pursuits and spirtitual thinking. It puts experience and mutual assistance behind weaker links in the chain of life and keeps the pace a steady one for all. It makes understandable and unforgettable the brotherhood of man.

These are the reasons wht I am a labor unionist and why I carry a union card.

Written by Charles Daly, a 38-year Teamster member of Local 753 and published in the 1960 of Teamster Magazine.

With corporate greed, daly attacks on working men and women, and the continuing war on workers never are these words more true than today.

Since taking office in 2015 the Local Union was committed to maintaining a presence in the York Area. The York Union Hall had been abandoned in 2012, allowing a bad situation to only worsen. Once the decision was made to restore the York Union Hall to its former glory the work began. Earlier this year Business Agents began working out of offices at the Hall and the facility was used for meetings with members from the area. On October 3, 2016 the York Union Hall began normal business hours with office staff working there along with the agents. It was a long tedious project, much of the work being done in-house to help contain costs, but once again the members of Local 776 have a Union Hall in York they can be proud of.

Local 776 President  Ed Thompson had this to say, “ Our campaign promise was to restore a presence in York and what better way then to restore, and revitalize a resource we already had. Once the roof was complete the restoration was a total team effort. I’d like to thank the Stewards and their families who came out this past spring and cleaned up the exterior of the property, making it look fresh and inviting again. Also thanks to the Officers, Agents, and Staff who gave so much of their time to bring this project to completion.”

On September 8, 2016, Local 776 attended the United Mine Workers of America “Keep the Promise” Rally in Washington DC to show support for the thousands of coal miners in attendance.  The rally was held on Capitol Hill to urge Congress to pass a law, which would keep the health care and pensions funded for thousands of retired coal mineworkers and their spouses.  Without the passing of the Miners Protection Act, retired coal miners and their families would start to lose their health care and pensions by December of this year.  Attending for Local 776 were: Business Agent Eddie Sutton, Organizer Mark Cicak, Member Rich Stover, and Steward Andy Barnes.

The York/Adams County Central Labor Council held it’s annual corn roast on August 30, 2016. This event is a time for all labor organizations to come together as one; as representatives of the members. Local 776 was in attendance; Business Agents Tim Turek and Dave Wolf had the Local’s support vehicle loaded for the event, and Trustee Rob Smiley manned the Teamster grill. Rob's wife Janet, and son Caleb also came out to support the event. Former Local 776 BA, now retired, Kittie Hake also was present. During her time in office Kittie had been a long time supporter of the council and continues to do so in retirement.

“On behalf of the Officers, the Business Agents, the staff of Local 776, and myself I would like to wish all workingmen and women a Happy Labor Day. America is stronger when America works. Every day you go to work for a paycheck; providing for your families, being able to buy the goods and services you need and want, keeping the American economy going, making our great country stronger and greater. Today is your day, take a moment to reflect on what your work provides you and your family, be proud of what you do, be proud to live and work in our great country.”
