  • Santa’s workshop was full of gifts during the Local’s Christmas party and none of our “Teamster” kids left empty handed! When the party was over we had toys left over so it was decided to help more kids have a brighter holiday. At the monthly membership meeting the next day the Executive Board asked the membership to recommend four charities that could use our donations to brighten the Holidays for some families in need. The members recommended Olivia’s house in York, The Shriners in Harrisburg, The Hershey Children’s Hospital in Hershey, and Survivors Inc. of Gettysburg. Members, Officers and Agents delivered the toys in time for Christmas Distribution.

Commented Local President Ed Thompson “It was great to see so many kids at the party thrilled with the gifts they received and what better way to celebrate the Holiday than by sharing what we had left over with others in need.” “This is just another way we support the communities where our members work and live,” added Thompson.

At the conclusion of the December monthly membership meeting the members in attendance were treated to a Christmas dinner. Ham, Turkey, and all the extras to go with it were offered. During the dinner members had their pick of items including Teamster apparel, and Poinsettia plants.

“The monthly membership meetings are an important tool for getting information to the members. But they are also important for building brotherhood among the members from the various employer groups we represent. I’m glad to see the members relaxing, enjoying the food, and enjoying each others company” commented President Ed Thompson.

    Merry Christmas!

On Saturday December 10, 2016 the Union Hall became Santa’s Christmas Land as Local 776 held its Christmas Party for members and retirees children and grandchildren. After a stop at Santa’s workshop for a gift next up was a visit with the Big Man himself! Followed by food, drinks, assorted sweet treats and a trip to the face painter!

President Ed Thompson was delighted at the crowd that filed the Hall. “With hurried daily life it’s important to be able to have quality time with our families and friends. Our name says it all, the Brotherhood of Teamsters. I would like to thank the Officers, Agents, and Staff for all the time and effort put forth to insure the party was a success!”

Someone had  a big list for Santa!

    All smiles!

    Everyone having a good time!

Local 776 member Sean Hightman recently set several world records in IPA (International Power Lifting Association) competition. Sean is a patrol officer with the West York Borough Police Department, having been with the force 4 ½ years,  and trains at Chaillets Private Fitness in York. In March of this year Sean participated in the IPA Pennsylvania state open where he placed first in the Amateur raw men’s open and first in the Police division; totaling 1260 pounds between squat, bench and deadlift. Seeing that his hard work was paying off Sean prepared for the IPA national championships, which were help at York Barbell in York on November 19-20.  Sean competed again in the raw amateur men’s open and in the Police category.  Sean won first place in both categories and took home the best lifter award with a total of 1335 pounds while weighing in at 165 pounds. Sean finished the national meet with the following results; Squat 520 pounds (world record in the men’s open and police divisions), bench 315 (Police division world record) deadlift 500 and a total of 1335 pounds (Police division world record).   This success at the national meet qualified Sean to compete at the IPA world’s competition, which is being held in Nova Scotia Canada in April 2017. Congratulations on your accomplishments Sean and good luck next year at the world competition.

On December 3, 2016 Local 776 sponsored a Christmas for Kids party for children in York County’s WIC (women, infants, and children) program. The party was once again held at the recently renovated and reopened York Union Hall. Party committee chairman Rob Smiley, a Local 776 Trustee, and 776 TITAN operator Mandy Day worked together through the year to make sure that over 100 children from some of the areas most needy families had a brighter Christmas. Each child received a gift and a chance to meet with Santa, along with a bag of treats to take home. After meeting with Santa there were snacks and refreshments available for the kids and their families.

Local 776 President Ed Thompson commented, “As a service organization the Local has a responsibility to our members in the workplace as well as a responsibility to the members of our community. Helping these kids have a brighter holiday is one way we give back to the community” I would like to thank the members of the committee who put a lot of time and effort into making this event happen, and also a thank you to Stroehmann/ Maier’s Bakery and Canteen Foods Corp. for their generous contributions that helped filled the “goodie bags” for the Kids”.

Recently a long-time Local 776 member decided it was time to start a new chapter in his life. Melvin “Mel” Harris, a 37 year employee of UPS decided it was time to stop pushing packages and join the ranks of the retired. While Mel spent his time at UPS working at the Harrisburg Hub he was active in the Local Union. Mel was a Steward for 30 years, and served on the Executive board for 4 1/2 years. Recognizing the importance of getting officials elected who share our views Mel was active with the Local’s political action committee; going out to the polls on election day to help get out the vote. When the Local would go out to the employer’s location with the Union truck and grill to meet with the members while serving hot dogs and drinks Mel could be found working the grill, introducing the members to the Local’s Officers and Agents.

Mel’s family, friends, and co-workers sent him off to retirement with a party at the Harrisburg American Legion. Mel is married to Phyllice; they have a daughter and two grandchildren. Their plans include spending more time with the grand kids and to do some traveling while enjoying retirement. At the party Local 776 President Ed Thompson congratulated Mel on his long career and thanked him for his time serving the Local Union.

On Saturday, November 12, 2016, the Pennsylvania State Police presented an active shooter presentation to the Local's Officers, Agents and members.  Lt. John Yunk of the State Police gave the presentation which highlighted how to handle active shooters in the workplace, schools and everyday places.

    This is serious business

    Lt. Yunk had everyone's attention

On behalf of myself and the Officers, Business Agents, and staff of Local 776 I would like to wish all Veterans a happy Veterans Day. It is because of your service that we enjoy the freedoms that make this country great.
