    The Labor Wire

    March 13, 2019

One year ago today, the labor movement delivered an upset victory, sending an unapologetically pro-union candidate to Congress and setting the table for a worker wave at the ballot box in 2018. In a suburban Pittsburgh district that voted overwhelmingly for President Donald Trump, union members mobilized and carried Conor Lamb over the finish line, delivering a message to thousands of candidates that embracing working people and our issues is the surest path to power.

A Sign of Things to Come

Lamb ran a campaign that placed unionism at the center of his platform. He proved himself as an advocate for working people, and in turn we came out in droves to support him.

In the months that followed, candidates across the country led worker-focused campaigns that highlighted unions as the solution to a rigged economy. In states like Illinois and Wisconsin, virulently anti-union governors were replaced by proven friends. And from city halls and state capitols to the U.S. Congress, more than 900 union members were elected to office.

The 2018 election cycle was defined and dominated by the issues that matter to working people and our movement. As we enter the early stages of the 2020 election, candidates at every level can expect to continue hearing from us.

Local 776 conducted three life-saving skills training seminars on March 9, 2019 for the membership. With training provided by One Heartbeat Away, LLC all of the participants now have the skills to assist and intervene when confronted with an emergency situation. The members were trained and certified in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) and choking emergencies.

At the conclusion Local President Ed Thompson summed it up by commenting: “The training these members received today could make the difference when they are confronted with a life or death situation involving a loved one, a co-worker, or the general public. The Local remains committed to providing our members with the tools and information they need to enhance their lives as well as the people around them. If you missed the opportunity to participate in the training it will be offered again next year. Details will be made available through the Stewards as well as the Local’s website.

    The Labor Wire

    March 1, 2019

The labor movement scored another victory for working people this week when a judge struck down West Virginia’s “right to work” law. The defeat of this poisonous anti-worker legislation is a victory for all working people across the country.

Circuit Judge Jennifer Bailey of Kanawha County agreed with the West Virginia AFL-CIO and other unions that challenged S.B. 1, which was passed in 2016, for violating the West Virginia Constitution’s prohibition of taking property without due process and compensation.

“Judge Bailey was right-on with her ruling,” West Virginia AFL-CIO President Josh Sword said. “We entered into this lengthy legal challenge nearly three years ago because we knew the law violated the rights of West Virginia workers—and we simply won’t stand for that.”

The victory comes on the heels of West Virginia teachers killing a bill that would have taken money away from public schools.

“The new law will require unions and union officials to work, to supply their valuable expertise, and to provide expensive services for nothing,” wrote Judge Bailey on tossing out the law.

Local 776 is offering certification in life saving techniques to the membership. Participants will be trained and certified in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) and choking emergencies. Don't delay, there are some openings available.
